Back when I was single, my brother who is good at woodworking, was usually pretty willing to make any of my little 'inspirations'. Now I am married to a fix-it genius who likes tinkering with engines and such like greasy things. Woodworking is not so much his thing. What I learned then, is that I could do it myself! So many times we cross things off as impossible because they look intimidating and scary. A few simple tools can become your friend and empower you to do so much more then you ever thought possible. I absolutely LOVE woodworking and making things! And I love when I can move things from the honey-do list to the to-do list. Yeah baby!!
Here is a site that I found very helpful when I started learning the basics: http://ana-white.com/2011/03/how-do-i-get-started This lady has tons of free plans on there and tutorials how to use basic tools. I love her site!
15 inches* wide x 33 inches long. This is the standard size of most bassinets so it will be easy to find a mattress that fits. It measures 13 1/4 in. deep on the back side. My bed measures 25 inches from the floor to the top of the mattress and the crib lies 6-7 inches lower than the bed. This can be adjusted to your liking and even be made level with your bed.
*Since the 1x12 actually measures 11 1/4 inches, it turned out 14 3/4 in. wide. But the mattress still fits nicely!
Here are the supplies you will need:
- Saw - a chop saw or miter saw would be nice but so far I have managed with a circular saw.
- Kreg jig - Learn more about this tool here. I got the smallest jig at the hardware store and it has served me well!
- Speed Square
- Tape measure
- Pocket hole screws - 1 1/4 inch, and 2 1/2 inch
- Wood glue
- Sand paper and sander - 60-100 grit
- Wood filler
(Pick out the straightest boards you can find. Note that the actual measurements are anywhere from 1/4 to 3/4 inches smaller. For example, a 1x4 actually measures 3/4 x 3 1/2 inches.)
1 - 1x12 @ 6 ft. long
1 - 1x4 @ 10 ft. long (or equivalent to 9 feet total)
2 - 2x2 @ 8 ft. long - more if your legs extend 32 inches in height.
2 - 1x3 @ 6 ft. long
Floor and front side:
1 - 1x12 @ 33 in. long
2 - 1x4 @ 33 in. long
2 - 1x12 @ 14 3/4 in. long
4 - 2x2 @14 3/4 in. long
4 - 2x2 @ 31 in. long - these are for the legs; adjust the height if needed to fit your bed.
1 - 1x3 @ 33 in. long
1 - 1x4 @33 in. long
7 - 1x3 @ 8 1/2 in. long
NOTE: For converting measurements to centimeters, try using this handy calculator. Also here is a link that may be helpful in determining the equivalents for the different size boards.
So here goes, lets put this thing together! I know you're supposed to have a level work surface like a table but hey, if you don't have one, the floor of an upstairs room can work too! Baby was getting a bit squished here but it wasn't too bad :)
I always reinforce my joints with wood glue for extra strength.
Note: It is really important to cut the slats perfectly square and all exactly the same length, otherwise you will have trouble getting everything to line up. Mine certainly did not turn out perfect but you would never notice it now :)
Fill the Pocket Holes and sand away!
Also sand all surfaces as desired and any rough edges. The tops of the four corner posts especially should have their edges rounded and sanded smooth.
TIP: A bit of sanding can do wonders with any areas that refused to line up nice and straight. Ah, there goes my little secret! In case you were wondering; no, I did not get it perfect either. Sometimes I start with a coarse paper like 60 grit, and finish off with a finer paper like 100 grit.
Fill the rest of the pocket holes, and sand the whole thing until you are satisfied.
Make sure you get 'low odor, no VOC' paint as it is less toxic, and give it time to cure before putting baby in it. If you can still smell it then it is still releasing toxins.
With my carpet floor, the crib does not budge easily. With a smooth floor it should be fastened to the bed somehow, maybe by tying the legs to your bed board.
No I did not have twins, little Stephen (on the left) is sharing his bed with cousin Parker who is but a day older. Sweet times!
